Strategic Plan

1. Forward

There is no doubt that Western Australian’s have a love affair with boating, and Western Australia has arguably the highest boat ownership and use by capita of any state in Australia. Dealing with boat ownership is dealing with peoples’ passion, but it is this passion that sets boating apart, and which creates a special industry.

The Boating Industry Association of WA (BIAWA) is the peak body concerned with the recreational and light commercial boating industry in all areas inclusive of boat building, marine manufacture, retail, service, tourism, boatyards and marinas, and is the peak body representing the needs of this industry sector in WA.

In this highly competitive and ever-changing world, the very survival and sustainability of the Industry is under constant pressure and threat, and the Association has recognized that there is a need for strategic action to build and sustain the industry and recreational boating as the major leisure pursuit for Western Australians.

It is vital that the Industry identifies its strengths and builds upon these, and also recognizes its weaknesses and acts to overcome these through taking advantage of opportunities that exist or arise, or that are created, to build a strong and sustainable industry.

A major strength of the WA marine industry is innovation. This great asset is the key to raising and sustaining the status of the WA marine industry. It is a strength that can survive the threats of cheap imports, mass production, skills shortages, economic downturns, and rising costs.

By creating a harmonious and productive niche industry based on specialization, innovation and high quality, the WA industry will not only survive, but will create a demand within discerning markets world-wide.

The creation of this specialized industry will need to be backed by sound promotions within the local, domestic and international markets that will sell the special pride and passion that comes from having something that ‘stands out from the crowd’.

The Strategic Plan has been formulated in consultation with the BIAWA members and maps out the manner in which this can be done. The Plan remains dynamic and as needs and demands change, the Plan will add strategies to meet them.

The Plan will require constant monitoring, reassessment and input from members to stay abreast of a rapidly changing business and physical environment, and hence will be presented on a year by year basis together with a report on the outcomes and achievements from the previous year.

It is, and will remain, the members’ blue-print for a sustainable future for the Industry.

The BIAWA, together with its members, is poised to move forward to meet the challenges of the future through the Business Plan and associated Strategic Plan for the Industry which provides the ‘how’.

  • To act at all times in the interest of the advancement and sustainability of the recreational and light commercial industry in Western Australia.
  • To be member driven so as to ensure that the actions, activities and representations of the Association are in accord with the needs, attitudes and desires of the members of the recreational and light commercial industry in Western Australia.

The Aim of the Strategic Plan is:

  • To achieve the aims of the Association through strategically planned and implemented actions and the aspirations of the members to be world leaders within the marine industry.

    4. MAJOR CHALLENGES

There is no doubt that in achieving these aims the industry will meet major challenges, the most difficult of which will be the instigation of change.

This change is more than simply changing the way the industry operates. It will necessitate challenging and changing individual and industry attitudes, jealousies, and set patterns.

However beneath this lies a culture of passion, leadership and innovation, and it is this underlying culture that will make overcoming the challenges possible.
